How will Berkeley develop me?
We want everyone joining Berkeley to see acceleration in their personal development.
This comes mainly from being given varied and stretching assignment roles, with high levels of responsibility for structuring and undertaking the work, and for managing the relevant client relationships.
Progress is seen as consultants take on ever larger scale and/or more complex challenges and deal at increasingly senior and more strategic levels. On every assignment a partner provides support, to act as a sounding board and help the consultant to get the most out of the experience.
But over and above the ‘on the job’ learning from assignment experience, Berkeley offers broader support and training in the development of lifelong professional skills, skills that are as applicable in other spheres of activity as in consulting at Berkeley – for example, skills in mastering and communicating complexity, in managing relationships and influencing, and in leadership.
This is achieved through a career development framework that provides the basis for six-monthly discussions on progress and aspirations; through personal development plans owned by the individual; and through a set of tailor-made training courses developed in partnership with leading academics and specialists.
In short, the aim is to provide each consultant a rewarding and satisfying career, rich in development opportunities, irrespective of whether they see Berkeley as a stepping-stone to other things or a final destination.

I recently completed my first retail assignment, an e-commerce project for M&S, which was also my first pure business strategy assignment. Although new territory for me, setting the project up with a small combined client and Berkeley team enabled us to build on our collective experiences and deliver an aggressive five year plan, signed off by the board. Two years ago I wouldn’t have envisaged working in such a high profile role, or even in this industry, with this level of project responsibility and client trust
