Profile
I studied Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Manchester University, including one exchange year studying in Lille, France. Having secured a job with Andersen Consulting, I deferred entry for a year and went travelling; to nowhere that spoke French. I started work in 1994, and spent 4 years in Financial Services (mostly the London Stock Exchange) followed by 7 years in Utilities (specialising in field service). I enjoyed working with people that fix wires and pipes for a living - refreshingly down to earth (literally..) for a consultant! In 2000, I also had a second sabbatical year overseas, this time doing voluntary work in Bolivia and travelling round South America.
I joined Berkeley in the autumn of 2005, simply because I liked everyone I met there; they seemed to care about the things that mattered and enjoyed themselves; and they focused on doing "proper" consulting work in an era when most of the big firms just seemed intent on selling ever larger, soul-destroying outsourcing deals!
Since joining Berkeley, I've spent a year at a major energy company running a global project in oil trading, and more recently have been helping Unilever shape an international business change programme. I like being embedded as part of the client's team (rather than an "us and them" client/consultant relationship) - you can really see how the work you are doing has a tangible impact.
Outside work, my family (wife and 2 daughters) keeps me busy, I sing and play the guitar (both badly), we entertain and eat out more than we should, and we still like to travel and explore new places whenever we can, despite the restraints of a young family. The place you're least likely to ever bump into me - just in case that's a concern - is the gym.
