Digital transformation and the CDO: what you need to know

Andy Harries

What does it take to develop a digital strategy that delivers meaningful business transformation? In this video series, Berkeley Partnership consultants Ami Lakhani and Andy Harries share their experience helping organisations develop and deliver digital strategy and transformation programmes. Drawing on client examples, they discuss how organisations can use digital technology and tools and data-driven decision-making to achieve strategic business goals, create competitive advantage, and deliver sustainable value.

Success starts with establishing a shared understanding of what digital transformation means within an organisation. Different stakeholders often have different interpretations of digital, making alignment on a clear digital vision a critical first step. Our consultants explore how the right digital strategy can potentially help organisations improve customer experiences, meet changing customer expectations, unlock new revenue opportunities, and/or transform core functions including HR, finance, and supply chain operations.

Ami and Andy also discuss the role of the Chief Digital Officer (CDO) in leading digital transformation initiatives and driving wider organisational transformation, based on Andy’s experience working client-side as an interim CDO. They highlight the importance of executive sponsorship, digital leadership, and a clear operating model that enables teams to deliver change effectively. Digital leaders can support business transformation by embedding digital capabilities into day-to-day operations and aligning transformation activity with wider organisational priorities.

The foundations required for digital transformation success include strong data and analytics capabilities, effective governance, and business process improvement. Data-driven insights and real-time information can support better decision-making, improve operational performance, and identify opportunities for cost savings. Organisations should focus on practical, scalable transformation strategies that deliver measurable outcomes.

Finally, Ami and Andy discuss how organisations should prioritise their digital transformation initiatives, launch pilot programmes, and generate proof points that build confidence across the business. By demonstrating value early, organisations can create momentum and ensure  commitment to transformation efforts.

Together, these insights provide practical guidance for business leaders looking to develop an effective digital strategy, accelerate digital transformation, improve business processes, and achieve the desired long-term business goals.
