1What do you like most about Berkeley?

The right balance of freedom to do a great job, with the support of both colleagues from across the firm. The opportunity to work with an exceptionally bright team of people who share core values but also bring a huge range of experience and capabilities to the table. A flat structure that discourages politics – egos are very much checked-in at the door. Policies and procedures that are light touch and work because of the trust held in our people. A scale that retains the ability to walk into the office and know everyone you meet!

2What’s the most important thing you learned at Berkeley?

If the picture doesn’t look right, then fix it. Be prepared to take a hard look at what you are doing and/or how you are doing it, and don’t be afraid to admit to the client it’s not working and needs to be changed. Obviously this shouldn’t be confused with a lack of commitment or sticking at working through issues – it's more a case of constantly thinking about whether there is a better way to achieve an outcome, not simply continuing with an approach regardless of its success. I’ve lived this two or three times on my current piece of work, and its been the right call every time.

3What are you passionate about in life?

Two things: aviation and cinema. Going to school across the road from a very active airfield probably set the ball rolling on the former and, a few years later when I had the wherewithal, it was from the same airfield that I gained my flying license. Doesn’t matter what it is, I’m always the one craning my neck upwards whenever I hear a plane going overhead. Whilst I’m qualified on fixed wing aircraft, I’ve also flown helicopters, gliders, microlights and even a hovercraft! When the weather is too poor to fly I indulge in cinema, whether it’s the latest blockbuster set in Outer Space or a kitchen sink drama set in the Outer Hebrides.
